Biography

John Scales was on October 6, 1835 in Nottingham, New Hampshire. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1863 after which he became a teacher for twenty years. In 1869, he came to Dover, NH and served as principle of Franklin Academy, a position he held until 1883 when he became editor of the "Dover Daily Republican" and the "Dover Enquirer." Scales was also a writer publishing a history of Dover. He died on July 7, 1928.

Abstract

Account book of John Scales (1835-1928) begun when he entered Dartmouth College in 1857. Includes a two-page, journal entitled "A journal of a college student, junior year, Dartmouth commenced April 8, 1862." The journal covers April 8, April 9, and April 19, 1862, covering the content of the classes he took on those days.
