Josiah Gilman served as a well-respected physician in Exeter for most of his adult life. His father was a judge, while his grandfather was among the founders of Exeter. His sister, Joanna, married Col. John Wentworth who became a member of the colonial legislature in Portsmouth until it was dissolved
