Brewster, Ebenezer, 1740-1814

Biography

The birth of Ebenezer Brewster was recorded on 25 Apr 1740 at Preston, Connecticut. He was a son of Ebenezer and Susanna (Smith) Brewster, and thus a descendant of Elder William Brewster of the "Mayflower".

Ebenezer's marriage to Hannah Avery (transcribed as "Axery") was recorded at Hanover, New Hampshire, on 17 Nov 1768 [Note: while the marriage location is Hanover, with which he was long associated, his residence throughout the Revolutionary War was his native town of Preston, Connecticut,] Recorded as "Col." and later "Gen.", he is prominently mentioned in records of Hanover -- alongside his presumed nephew-in-law, Joseph Lee -- before 1800; thereafter, both appear to have removed some miles north along the Connecticut River, to Haverhill. Ebenezer's gravestone, which is in the Dartmouth College Cemetery in Hanover, bears testimony to the appreciation of his townsmen for his character and service:

Ebenezer Brewster was in the "Lexington Alarm" from Preston; he was a second lieutenant, Col. Parson's regiment, 1775, and a captain, 1776 (Conn. Men in the Rev'n, 20, 73, 99). The family was residing at Hanover, New Hampshire, by 1784, the year in which he was made colonel of the 24th New Hampshire militia; March 27, 1793, he was made brigadier-general of the sixth brigade (New Hampshire State Papers, 20:254 and 22:513). His gravestone is inscribed with his ultimate rank, Major General.
