Scammel, Alexander, 1747-1781
Biography
Alexander Scammel was was a Harvard educated attorney and an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was wounded on September 30, 1781, near Yorktown and subsequently died on October 6 in Williamsburg, Virginia, making him, a colonel, the highest ranking American officer killed during the Siege of Yorktown.

One-page letter from Alexander Scammel of Steenrapie, NY (Stone Arabia) to Richard Varrick telling him the method of listing casualties; says the addressee will now be able to gain in rank. Included with this is an epitaph for Scammel, which is printed.
