Biography

Richard Varick was an American lawyer, military officer, and politician. A major figure in the development of post-Independence New York City and State, Varick became the 45th Mayor of New York City in 1789 and served eleven concurrent one-year terms until 1801.

One-page letter from Alexander Scammel of Steenrapie, NY (Stone Arabia) to Richard Varrick telling him the method of listing casualties; says the addressee will now be able to gain in rank. Included with this is an epitaph for Scammel, which is printed.
