Biography

William Henry Woodward was born on September 17, 1774 in Hanover, New Hampshire to Bezaleel Woodward and Mary (Wheelock) Woodward. After preparing for college with Dr. Dana of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Woodward enrolled in Dartmouth, graduating in 1792. He then embarked on the practice of law in Hanover, eventually becoming the Chief Justice of New Hampshire's Western Circut Court of Common Pleas in 1813. Woodward served as the Treasurer of Dartmouth College from 1805 to 1816. A Mason, Woodward became Master of the Franklin Lodge in 1801, eventually becoming District Grand Master and later presiding over New Hampshire's Grand Lodge. He also served as president of New Hampshire Alpha of Phi Beta Kappa. Woodward died on August 9, 1818.
