Biography

John Samuel Sherburne was born in 1757, in Portsmouth, Province of New Hampshire, British America. Sherburne attended Harvard University, graduated from Dartmouth College in 1776 and read law in 1776. During the American Revolutionary War he served in the Continental Army as a brigade staff major. He entered private practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire from 1776 to 1789, and from 1797 to 1801. He was United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire from 1789 to 1793, and from 1801 to 1804 and a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1790 to circa 1793, and in 1801.
