Biography

Jonathan Freeman was born on May 28, 1777 in Hanover, New Hampshire to Jonathan and Sarah Freeman. In March of 1799, he enlisted in the United States Army as an ensign in the Third Regiment of Infantry, which was stationed along the new nation's northwest border. Four years later, on November 8, 1803, Freeman married Mary Whitehouse. Beginning in 1809, he served for a number of years as the Town Clerk for Hanover. Mary died in 1929; Freeman later remarried to Elizabeth Digby Belcher Oliver. He died in Hanover on July 29, 1858.
