Biography

Agnes Bixler Kurtz was born on October 25, 1941 in Hamden, Connecticut. She graduated from Smith College with a B.S. in 1962 and an M.S. in 1963. She taught physical education at Vassar and the University of Delaware before coming to Dartmouth in 1972 as the assistant director of physical education for women's athletics. Bixler developed the College's first intercollegiate and intramural athletic programs for women and coached women's teams in lacrosse, field hockey and squash. She retired in 1989.

Scope and Contents

The oral history interview of Agnes Bixler Kurtz is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Jane L. Carroll in July 1997. The entire interview runs for approximately two hours and covers her experiences at Dartmouth as the first director of physical education for women and coach of women's sports following the arrival of coeducation at Dartmouth. Interviewed by Jane L. Carroll on July 24, 1997 in Hanover, N.H.
