Biography

Francis Scott Key (August 1, 1779 – January 11, 1843)was an American slaveowner, lawyer, author, and amateur poet from Frederick, Maryland, who is best known for writing the lyrics for the American national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner".

The original manuscript of the Star-Spangled Banner written on board a vessel in Baltimore harbor during the bombardment of Fr. McHenry, Spet 12-14, 1814. Original manuscript in posession of the Maryland Historical Society.
