Biography

Oliver William Bourne Peabody, twin brother of William Bourne Peabody, was the son of a New Hampshire judge. He was schooled at Exeter and Harvard, where he studied law. Peabody practiced in New Hampshire, served in the state legislature, and edited the Rockingham Gazette and Exeter News-Letter. In 1830 he moved to Boston, where he assisted Alexander H. Everett in editing the North American Review. In 1842 he became professor of English literature at Jefferson College in Louisiana, returning the following year to become minister of the Unitarian church in Burlington, Vermont, where he lived until his death in 1848.
