Biography

Edward Atkinson was born on February 10, 1827, in Brookline, Ma. A successful businessman and entrepreneur, he founded the Brookline Savings Bank in 1871, and was its president until 1877. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the American Statistical Institute as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1889, he received the degree of LL.D. from the University of South Carolina, and an honorary Ph.D. from Dartmouth College. He campaigned for Grover Cleveland, and was a member and vice president of the American Anti-imperialist League. Atkinson died on December 11, 1905.
