Biography

Francis W. Sears was born in Plymouth, Ma. on October 1, 1898. He graduated from MIT and accepted a faculty appointment there after graduation. He joined the Dartmouth College faculty in 1955, first as visiting professor and then as the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy. He was also the codiscoverer of the Debye-Sears effect, and the author of many physics textbooks. He was a fellow of the Optical Society of America, and was active in the American Association of Physics Teachers, serving as its president in 1956. In 1962, Sears received the Oersted Medal for "notable contributions to the teaching of physics." Sears died in November 1975.
