Biography
Ulysses Dow Tenney was born in 1826, in Hanover, NH. He began his work as a student of his uncle, portrait painter Adna Tenney, and leading Boston portraitist Francis Alexander before establishing himself in Manchester, NH in 1849. By his own account he painted nearly 1000 portraits including President Franklin Pierce as well as Dartmouth College presidents Asa D. Smith and Samuel C. Bartlett. Tenney died in 1908.
