Biography
John W. Hennessey, Jr. was born on March 25, 1925 in Danville, Pennsylvania and attended public schools in York, Pennsylvania. His undergraduate education at Princeton University was interrupted by three and a half years of service during World War II in the Army, half of that time spent overseas in the Pacific Theater. He received his B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Princeton University in 1948; his M.B.A. degree, with distinction, from Harvard University in 1950; and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Washington, where he rose to the rank of associate professor.
Dr. Hennessey was a member of the Dartmouth College faculty from 1957 to 1987, principally in the Tuck School of Business Administration, where he served as associate dean, dean, and as Charles Henry Jones Professor of Management. He also held one of five Third Century Professorships, established at Dartmouth's bicentennial with a broad mandate for interdisciplinary work. Among his other activities at Dartmouth was co-founding the Institute for the Study of Applied and Professional Ethics. He also served as a trustee of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital from 1963 to 1986, serving as chairman from 1977 to 1983; chairman of the Joint Council of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from 1977 to 1983 and a trustee of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from 1977 to 1986 and from 1991 to 1996, serving as chairman from 1992 to 1995.
In the wider educational community, Dr. Hennessey was chair of the board of trustees of the Educational Testing Service; president of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business; and founding chairman of the Council for Opportunity in Graduate Management Education (COGME). He served as a trustee of the University of Vermont; UVM's first provost; and interim president. He served on the board of directors of such business corporations as H. P. Hood, Inc.; Zayre Corporation (now TJX Companies, Inc.); and the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company.

Oral history interview with John W. Hennessey, Jr.
The oral history interview of John W. Hennessey, Jr. is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Jane L. Carroll during September, October and November, 1996. The entire interview runs for approximately fourteen hours and covers his nearly forty-year career serving Dartmouth College, the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
