Biography
Moses Motley Sargeant was born in Candia, NH, on October 3, 1876. He attended the public schools of Candia and Manchester, and entered Dartmouth College immediately after his graduation from Manchester Central High School in 1895. At Dartmouth, he was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa and Sphinx and roomed with Walter Sydney “Pete” Adams, with whom he would maintain a lifelong friendship. Upon his Dartmouth graduation Sargeant was associated with the Burbank brokerage and real estate firm in Boston, MA. He also worked for Glaeser, Thompson Company and Edgerly & Crocker in Boston, before moving to New York City to represent the latter. In New York City he was engaged principally in stock brokerage and was associated with the firms Shoemaker & Company; Hollister, Lyon, and Walton; and Francis Marden. In 1909, he married Grace Edgerton Howland of New Bedford, MA, and moved to New Bedford with her and their three children in 1918. Here, he became an active member of the Pilgrim Church of New Bedford and the proprietor of Paisler & Willis, dealers in building materials and masons’ supplies, until his retirement in 1942. Sargeant was a member of the Old Dartmouth Historical Society. He died in New Bedford on February 26, 1946.

Moses Motley Sargeant (1876-1946), broker. Dartmouth College Class of 1899. Consist of correspondence between Sargeant and his uncle Cyrus Sargeant, as well as transcripts of the letters, which contain life advice.
