Biography
Weyman I. Lundquist was born in 1930. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1952, and Harvard Law School in 1955. In the early 1960s, Lundquist was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Alaska. It was during his time in Alaska that he became interested in the Soviet Union. He visited the country for the first time in 1974, when he traveled with his family on the Trans Siberian Railroad. From 1980-1986, Lundquist was the Chair of the America Bar Association Litigation Section Soviet Lawyer Dialogue Committee. During that time he organized a Lawyers Alliance for Nuclear Arms Control meeting with Soviet Officials (1981) and met with Soviet diplomats and lawyers on a regular basis in order to foster relationships between Soviet and American lawyers. In 1988, he lectured at Moscow State University and the Soviet Judicial Institute. Throughout the remainder of the 1980's and the 1990s, Ludquist organized, hosted and attended numerous meetings with Russian and American government officials, enterprise leaders and political leaders, including Miklhail Gorbachev and Alexander Sukharev. He also facilitated conferences and visits of delegates between the two countries.
