Biography
Robert L. McGrath, b.1935. Professor Emeritus of Art History at Dartmouth. McGrath graduated from Middlebury College in 1959 and from Princeton University with an MFA in 1962. The following year he received his Ph.D. from Princeton after which he became an instructor in the art department at Dartmouth College. In 1965, he was promoted to assistant professor, becoming an associate professor in 1969, and a full professor in 1975. During his time at Dartmouth, McGrath taught classes in the Renaissance and on medieval European art, as well as American art. Among his many publications is 'Early Vermont Wall Painting, 1790-1850," which was published in 1972. Other publications include “Gods in Granite: The Art of the White Mountains of New Hampshire” and “Art and American Conservation Movement” both published in 2001. McGrath also curated an exhibition on the centennial of the Adirondack State Park entitled "A Wild Sort go Beauty: Public Places and Private Visions."
