Biography
(Richard) Dick Hoefnagel was born on September 25, 1922, in Indonesia. He received his MD from the University of Amsterdam Medical School in 1950. After a rotating internship at University Hospitals in Amsterdam (1950-1951), he came to the United States and interned at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, followed by a residency at the Children's Hospital in Washington, DC. From 1957 to 1962, he served as assistant professor of pediatrics at Boston University. He joined the faculty of Dartmouth Medical School as an assistant professor of pediatrics in 1962, and was promoted to professor of maternal and child health in 1976. Hoefnagel was the first director of clinical genetics at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and has published and lectured on pediatric and maternal genetic disorders. He retired in 1986, and devoted his time to researching American history, with a particular interest in the history of Dartmouth College. Hoefnagel published several articles and books on or related to Dartmouth, including "Incunabula in the Dartmouth College Library" (1980), and with Virginia L. Close, "Eleazar Wheelock and the Adventurous Founding of Dartmouth College" (2002). Hoefnagel died on July 10, 2013.

Dick Hoefnagel (1922-2013), pediatrician and author. The collection contains photocopies of historical documents and articles, correspondence, clippings, writings and notes related to his research of American history with an emphasis on the history of Dartmouth College.
