Biography

John Willcox Brown (JWB), Dartmouth Class of 1937, was born on January 29, 1915 in Wilmington, Delaware, and died on August 16, 2005 in Concord, New Hampshire. JWB married Natale Linton in 1941 and had four children. JWB was an environmentalist, politician, forestry consultant, lecturer, and activist. He attended Tower Hill School in Delaware between 1921 and 1933, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1937 with a B.A. in Economics. He earned a Masters in Forestry in 1941 from Yale University, and a M.S. in Conservation in 1953 from the University of Michigan. JWB was a self-employed natural resources consultant between 1959 and 1984, and a volunteer consultant after his retirement in 1984. He was politically active in the New Hampshire Democratic Party and ran for government posts throughout his active life. He was also Graduate Manager of the Dartmouth Outing Club between 1937 and 1939. His professional experience includes: Timber Operations, New York and California (1941-1948); Field Agent for the U.S. Forest Service research branch (1946-1947); Instructor and Assistant Professor, School of Natural Resources, University of Michigan (1949-1955); Assistant Forester of the Society of the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (1955-1959); Lecturer at the New England College (1971-1977); and the New Hampshire Water Supply and Pollution Control Commission (Vice-Chairman in 1979 and Chairman between 1980 and 1984). JWB actively participated in numerous organizations, associations, boards, committees, initiatives and projects related to national and local politics, conservation and the environment, the community, international cooperation and relations, town administration, social, civic, cultural associations, and the outdoors. Among other important positions JWB held are: Director of the NH Council on World Affairs (from c. 1960) and the NH Civil Liberties Union Foundation (from c. 1980); Trustee of the SPNHF, the Audubon Society of NH, the Science Center of NH, and the MRWC; member of the Society of American Foresters, the International Society of Tropical Foresters, and the International Water Resources Association; field agent of the Task Force on Open Space (Dunbarton, NH); Member, Treasurer and Chairman of the Dunbarton Town Forest Committee; Project Director of the Partners of the Americas, NH/Ceara (Brazil) partnership; Founder and President (1958-1978) of the State Park Associates; Dunbarton Selectman (1967-1973), Town Moderator and School District Moderator (1976-1982); and Member of the Moosilauke Advisory Committee (from 1973). He was also member of the Interview Committee for Merrimack County Dartmouth Alumni Club, and Dartmouth Class of 1937 Sub-agent of the Alumni Fund (c.1988-1991).
