Biography

Joseph Gales Jr. (June 15, 1786 – July 21, 1860) was an American journalist and the ninth mayor of Washington, D.C., from 1827 to 1830.

Three-page letter from Robert Charles Winthrop to Joseph Gales, telling him that he is sending 6 bottles of the Constitution Madeira, imported in honor of Daniel Webster and the Hayne Speech, and a few bottles of Chambertin, to assure Mr. Gale of his grateful rememberance of his kind attentions. He regrets that he and Mrs. Winthrop are unable to dine with Gales today.
