Early education at home and Phillips Academy, Andover, MA, Wells attended Yale and belonged to Delta Kappa Epsilon. He continued at Union Theological Seminary (NYC) and earned a BD at Andover Theological Seminary in 1885. Despite this theological training, Wells was never ordained. After traveling Europe for two years, he taught at Phillips Academy (1887-1890), then became professor of history and political science at Bowdoin College, and moved to Dartmouth College as professor of sociology in 1893, a position he held until his death. He was a recognized authority on sociology. Dartmouth conferred an honorary AM degree in 1908.
