"WEBSTER, DANIEL-- 200TH ANNIVERSARY"; "This video highlights the ""commemoration and celebration"" of the 200th anniversary of Daniel Webster's birthday. Daniel Webster, a statesman, lawmaker, lawyer, orator, and member of the Dartmouth class of 1801, is known most notably for his part in the famous Dartmouth College Case in which he defended Dartmouth in front of the Supreme Court. The program, put on by the Dartmouth Club of Washington and the Webster Society, takes place in the Senate Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. The presentation of colors by the Joint Armed Services Color Guard precedes a brief introduction by the two hosts of the evening, Alan L. Dessoff '57, President of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, and George Douth, Founder and President of the Webster Society. The remainder of the first tape shows clips of guests socializing with David T. McLaughlin, 14th President of Dartmouth College, and Senator Paul Tsongas '62. In the second tape President McLaughlin, honors Daniel Webster with a brief summary of the ideals and values he represented and a description of Webster's defense of Dartmouth in the Dartmouth College Case. President McLaughlin is followed by Mr. Fred Schwengel, President of the U. S. Capital Historical Society and a member of the Webster Society. Mr. Schwengel relates to the audience his own personal reflections of Daniel Webster's character and actions. In the final tape Senator Paul Tsongas '62 addresses the crowd. He relates his own Dartmouth experiences followed by a disscussion of the value of internships and the importance of becoming more involved in politics. Recorded in Washington, D.
