COMMENCEMENT 1992; "The 1992 Commencement Ceremony opens with a prayer by Dean James Breeden '56, followed by the awarding of advanced degrees by the Deans of the respective graduate schools: Edward A. Fox, Dean of the Tuck School of Business; Charles E. Huthchinson, Dean of Thayer School of Engineering; Andrew G. Wallace, Dean of Dartmouth Medical School, Richard W. Birnie, Dean of Graduate Studies. Provost John Strohbehn presents the seven Honorary Degrees: Alan A. Reich '52, Head of the National Organization of Disability, is awarded a Degree of Doctors of Law. Two Doctorates of Letters are awarded. Helen Vendler is honored for her criticism of contemporary poetry. Phillip Roth, novelist, is honored for his literary contribution such as ""Goodbye, Columbus."" Jessye Norman, highly acclaimed opera singer, receives a Doctorate of Fine Arts. C. Vann Woodward receives a Doctorate of Humane Letters for his studies of southern history. A Doctorate of Science is awarded to Edward Lorenz '38, MIT Professor Emeritus of Meteorology, for his contributions in the field of meteorology. Oscar Arrias Sanchez, former President of Costa Rica and winner of a Nobel Peace Prize in 1987, is awarded a Degree of Doctor of Laws, then delivers the Commencement Address. Henry Carlton Spindler, gives the Valedictory To the College. After the granting of the Bachelor of Arts Degrees, President Freedman gives the Valedictory To The Seniors.
