Popular poet, songwriter, veteran, Rod McKuen, called the hand gesture given here "The Universal Salute". The infantryman on the left is part of an M-60 machine gun team. He is carrying a helmit radio, extra machine gun ammunition, smoke grenades, rucksack, an M-16 rifle, and a sense of humour.
