Description
Contains the correspondence of Henry Bridge Atherton (1835-1906) with members of his family including his mother Roxana Ives Atherton (1797-1891), his father Jonathan Atherton (1787-1875), his brothers Joseph Van Ness Atherton (1823-1897), Solon Ives Atherton (1821-1891) and Everett Hall Atherton (1828-1909), his sister Ellen Atherton (1819-), his first wife Abbie (Armington) Atherton (1839-1896), his second wife Ella (Blaylock) Atherton (1860-1933) and his children Maude Atherton (1864-1913), Grace Atherton (1869-1926), Anna Held Atherton (b.1876), Henry Francis Atherton (1883-1949), Blaylock Atherton (1900-1963) and Ives Atherton (1903-1989) as well as nephews, nieces and other members of the extended Atherton/Armington family. Also contains letters written while he was serving as Captain of Company "C" of the 4th Vermont Regiment during the Civil War, many with transcriptions, and letters pertaining to the estate of his father Jonathan Atherton and the sale of land owned by the family. Some correspondence of close family members is also included. Of note is the correspondence by and about Henry Turner, nicknamed "Vort." Vort was an escaped slave who was taken in by Atherton and was taken home by him to Vermont.
