Dartmouth-Cornell Football Trophy, ca.1939-1988
Description
This file contains a newspaper clipping, an article, a letter, and a document entitled "The 1915 Trophy." The file documents a tradition that the winner of the annual Dartmouth-Cornell football game would receive and hold, for one year, the statue of a "cigar store Indian maiden" as a trophy. At the next game this statue would transfer to the next winning team. The articles in the file describe both the tradition as well as the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of the statue utilizing archaic terms and imagery that are racist toward Indigenous people and also include sexist language, common at the time, in references to women.
