Delta Alpha, ca. 1897-1923

 Folder, Case: 5
Part of DA-857: Rauner Vertical Files

Description

This file contains leaflets, programs, clippings, and photos documenting the "Delta Alpha" hazing tradition.

For several decades over the late 19th and early 20th century, all Dartmouth freshmen were subjected to a hazing process known as "Delta Alpha." Each dormitory had its own "chapter" of Delta Alpha and conducted its own initiation, during which freshmen were required to follow strict rules and perform humiliating tasks. This file consists mainly of lists of rules and programs for the banquets that followed initiation. Several images in the file depict acts of hazing, including one photograph of a person wearing a racist costume and brownface.
