"Indian Symbol" - Articles Undated

 Folder, Case: 7
Part of DA-857: Rauner Vertical Files

  • Staff Only

Description

Includes undated newspaper clippings, a cartoon, fliers, memos, statements, and an excerpt from an oral history transcript. The file, like most of the other files related to the Dartmouth "Indian Symbol," contains a variety of materials documenting the controversy over the continued use of the symbol as a mascot of the College. These materials are undated and primarily show the viewpoint of the Indigenous students, faculty, and staff at the institution.... There are a few items representing the alternative view of the symbol that, like the Dr. Seuss fundraising cartoon, include stereotypical depictions or representations of Indigenous people. The file also contains an excerpt, specific to the issue of the Symbol, from John Kemeny's oral history.
