Description
This file contains news clippings, photocopied articles, letters, and other material documenting ongoing debates over the Dartmouth "Indian Symbol" from 1980 to 1983. Several of the documents relate to pushback by some alumni against the discontinuation of the symbol and to a 1983 incident in which students displayed the symbol at an athletic event. Of note are two letters from the group Native Americans at Dartmouth and a sermon and essay by Dartmouth... College Chaplain Reverend Warner Traynham. A few images of the stereotypical symbol are present.
