Library -- Tower (Bells, Weathervane, Clock)

 Folder, Case: 8
Part of DA-857: Rauner Vertical Files

Description

The file contains information documenting the Baker Library tower at Dartmouth College, including the bells, clock, and weathervane. Article reprints, photocopies, news clippings, photographs, memoranda, and notes are included and date from the 1920s to the 2000s. Numerous images of the original weathervane design, as well as proposed alternative designs, are contained within the folder. The weathervane, which adorned the tower from 1928-2020, was demeaning to Native peoples in its depiction of Mohegan minister Samson Occom being ministered to by Dartmouth’s founder Eleazar Wheelock, who sits on a stump in front of a barrel of rum. The weathervane was removed in the Summer of 2020 and replaced with a device showing the four cardinal points.
