Description

This file contains event programs, flyers, a news clipping, and printed web content dating from 1938 to 2014 (bulk 1996-2008) about the Dartmouth Powwow (also spelled Pow-wow or Pow Wow), an annual intertribal Indigenous community event held by the Native Americans at Dartmouth (NAD) student group. Event brochures include information about the history of the Powwow, powwow dances, Indigenous life at Dartmouth, and rules for participants and spectators. Of note is a 1938 program for the "Third Annual Dartmouth Pow-Wow" held in San Francisco. Unlike the other programs, the 1938 event was not an Indigenous gathering, but rather a general gathering of alumni from western states, very few of whom were Indigenous. Referring to this alumni gathering as a "pow-wow" speaks to the way Dartmouth has historically been identified with Indigeneity, despite largely excluding Indigenous people for most of its history. The 1938 program cover includes an image of the Baker Library weather-vane, featuring a stereotypical depiction of an Indigenous person.
