From the Collection:

The papers of John Moffatt Mecklin document Mecklin's education, academic career, and relationship with his children. The collection contains professional and personal correspondence, material related to Mecklin's writings, including a typescript of his autobiography, "My Quest for Freedom," and some teaching-related material, including documentation of the controversy that led to his resignation from Lafayette College. The collection also contains a book on Mecklin written by his daughter, Mary Mecklin Jenkins. Of note are study notes in German; correspondence with E.D. Warfield of Lafayette College, A.P. Camphor, president of the Central Alabama Institute, and E.M. Hopkins, president of Dartmouth College (including an autobiographical letter from Hopkins); and a written reaction to Mecklin's book, "Democracy and Race Friction," by a Liberian missionary and educator.
