Records of the Dean of Thayer School of Engineering contain correspondence of the founder, Sylvanus Thayer, first director, Robert Fletcher, and Dartmouth College President, Asa Dodge Smith; financial records; student accounts and research; meeting minutes, reports and proposals of the Board of Overseers; faculty meeting minutes, CVs, and research; and projects undertaken by the faculty and students of the School. The materials document the curricular development of the Thayer School, and its research and design endeavors. The bulk of the collection is contained within the subject files of the office of the various deans, comprising memoranda, correspondence, committee minutes, publications and reports, documenting the administrative, financial, and curricular concerns of the School, its faculty and students, and thephysical plant. Early records of the School received from the Dean's office primarily reflect activities of the School during a time period when the Dean had oversight over most functions. Additional aspects of the administrative function of the Thayer Shcool may be found in records of the Admissions Office, Development Office, and the Accounting department. Additional information on students and academic records maybe found within the records of the Registrar.

Abstract
The Thayer School of Civil Engineering was established at Dartmouth College in 1867 through the beneficence of General Sylvanus Thayer, Dartmouth 1807, and former superintendent of West Point. General Thayer selected Robert Fletcher of West Point to be the first director of the school. Records of the Dean of the Thayer School of Engineering contain correspondence of General Thayer, Fletcher, and Dartmouth College President, Asa Dodge Smith, discussing the founding and academic program; financial records; student accounts and research; meeting minutes, reports and proposals of the Board of Overseers; faculty meeting minutes, CVs, and research; projects undertaken by the faculty and students of the School, and general subject files from the Office of the Dean documenting the administrative, financial, and curricular concerns of the School, its faculty and students, and its physical plant..
