Description

Three-page letter from Nathaniel Hawthorne in Boston to John L. O'Sullivan in Washington, D.C. in which he states, in reference to a clerkship offered him through Sem Pierce, that he does not like being an office-holder, but will confer with Pierce on the matter. A clipped signature of Hawthorne, from the Rugg autograph collection accompanies letter as well as a typed note.
