Description

The papers of Charles S. McClain contain a typescript of extracts from McClain's diary, entitled "The tale of an icy cruise." The entries, dated May 22 to July 24, 1884, cover the period that McClain was serving on the "Alert," one of the ships sent in search of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition. The entries were edited by Josephine B. McClain Jordan. Some correspondence concerning the diary is also included.
