Eighteen letters from John Lothrop Motley, concerning family and business affairs. Includes correspondence relating to his work as a diplomat, his publications ("Rise of the Dutch Republic," "History of the United Netherlands") and his comments on Italian politics. Also includes references to the election of 1868 in the United States and his role in the nomination of Ulysses S. Grant for the presidency. Includes two pages of biographical notes in a hand other than Motley's.
