Hannibal Hamlin letter
Description
Letter from Hannibal Hamlin, congressman from Maine in Washington, DC to Nathan Towson, requesting Paymaster General to grant Nathan Weston a furlough of 4 1/2 months to recover from strain of arduous service transporting money from New Orleans to the "seat of war." Hamlin quotes from letter written by this Maine soldier on December 23, 1846, in which he related the extent of his responsibilities, dangers, discomforts and resulting illnesses. According to Gardner's army register, Weston resigned June 30, 1847.
