John Young Mason letter
Description
Letter from John Young Mason in Richmond, Virginia to P. Clayton, regarding settlement of the late Maj. Sparks' account. (William A. Spark of Virginia, Paymaster March 1847). Mason was Secretary of the Navy from 1846-1854 and practiced law in Richmond from 1849-1854. In this case he represents widowed sister and heir of Maj. Sparks. Accounts of War Department as well as Treasury Department necessary to settle account of the Maj. $1400 due him from Treasury. Also $ 1010 due "on account of Mexican contributions by him." The latter was arranged by Mr. McPherson, clerk in the office of the Secretary of War.
