Copy of letters patent for the dissolution of the monastery at Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, and charter establishing Ely Cathedral
Description
Three documents on 17 sheets of paper, stitched together and rolled, containing a contemporary manuscript copy in Latin of the dissolution of the Priory of St. Peter and Etheldreda in Ely, Cambridgeshire (1539), a copy of the charter establishing Ely Cathedral (1541), as well as an original 1574 Elizabethan indenture related to the killing of crows and other birds seen as agricultural pests. The letters patent name the Priory's holdings and monks who will carry on with new duties. The whole is rolled within a parchment wrapper with the Steward family coat of arms.
