 Collection
Identifier: MS-1487
MS-1487

Description

Archive of family and social letters dated 1861 to 1888 (bulk from 1861 to 1874), with most of them being written to George D. Holton of Charlestown, New Hampshire. The letters are written by his mother, Emeline (Browne) Holton; siblings, Emma and Willie Browne Holton; aunts, uncles, cousins, classmates, and other friends. Most of these letters were sent to Holton primarily while he was away from home studying at the New-London Literary and Scientific Institute (now Colby-Sawyer College) in New London, NH and at Dartmouth College (Class of 1873). Besides the letters written to Holton, the collection contains letters written between members of his family - either his parents, siblings, or extended family members, cousins, as well as friends. Of note are letters written to George Holton from his cousin Ella F. Holton during her studies at the Tilden Ladies Seminary in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. The collection also includes 7 volumes of notebooks (1862-1879) and assorted ephemeral manuscripts and printed documents.
