Harry Hutchins correspondence
Description
Approximately 548 letters between Harry Hutchins (Class of 1900) and his girlfriend, and future wife, Emily Thompson Hilliard. Hutchins writes to Emilie about life as a Dartmouth student and his enginering work in Philadelphia. His letters discuss entertainments (including Dragon and Phi Kappa Psi), sports (primarily baseball and football), card-playing, and his efforts to avoid drinking and gambling. Emilie's letters document the life of a young woman at the turn of the 20th century, providing insight about family and social life in Lancaster, New Hampshire, and her work in the office of the Coos County Register of Deeds. The letters document the progress of courtship, sexual intimacy, and preparations for marriage.
