Description

The Olcott Family papers document the life and career of Mills Olcott (1774-1845) and his family. The collection contains correspondence, deeds, texts of Federalist speeches, account books, and other papers. It includes material on locks and canals on the Connecticut River, legal issues, banking, and Dartmouth College, of which Mills Olcott was Treasurer (1816-1822) and Trustee (1821-1845). Correspondents include Thomas Weston Thompson, whose letters deal with the War of 1812 era and Washington, D.C., events, including the trial of Aaron Burr, President James Monroe, the War of 1812, taxes, the Bank bill, and Decatur's expedition to Algiers. There is also material about the Coos Bank of Haverhill (N.H.) and about the White River Falls Bridge Company. The bulk of the collection consists of letters to Mills Olcott, including letters from various family members.
