Account Books collection
Description
The collection includes account books originating from the Upper Connecticut River Valley as well as various New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine towns. The majority of the books are from the 18th and 19th centuries, but a few extend into the 20th Century. Types of accounts include general stores, agricultural, merchants, post office, physicians, pharmacists, along with individual or family accounts. Some account books are unidentified. Many volumes contain ephemeral items tipped into the pages and include letters, recipes, newspaper articles, printed advertisements, and pressed plants. Some books also contain death records, diary entries, or children's drawings. Possible factors of note in the collection are the accounts of Dartmouth students, Hanover business accounts, and a large quantity of business and individual accounts from Bath, Hanover, and Lyme, NH and Norwich and Windsor, VT. The collection was built piecemeal by Dartmouth College Special Collections and is arranged alphabetically by town.
