Description

The papers of the President’s Committee on Civil Rights contain correspondence and memoranda to and from members of the Committee, transcripts of committee and subcommittee meetings, press releases, a meeting agenda, three drafts of “To Secure These Rights: The Report of the President’s Committee on Civil Rights,” and miscellaneous statements and reports. The papers document the activities of the Truman-appointed Committee between December 1946 and December 1947 as it investigated the status of civil rights in America and wrote a report with its findings and recommendations. Of note in the collection are the letters of John Sloan Dickey, President of the College from 1945 and 1970 and the Vice Chairman of this Committee; and the memoranda and letters of Robert K. Carr, a Dartmouth professor from 1937 to 1960, the Executive Secretary of the Committee, and primary author of “To Secure These Rights.”
