Richard Byrd papers
Description
The papers of Richard E. Byrd contain photographs, letters and memorabilia related to his expeditions to the Antarctic between 1928-1930. The material was originally bound in a scrapbook, which Byrd presented to Arthur T. Walden, and includes a letter from Byrd to Dorothy Bickum, which contains a flag Byrd carried to the South Pole, and letters from Sir Douglas Mawson. Correspondence and documents chronicling the protracted negotiations for payment for work done by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Ltd., to fit the "Bear of Oakland" and the "Pacific Fir" for the 2nd Byrd Antarctic Expedition, are also included.
