Description

The colledtion contains letters home to family, both from school (New London Academy) and from his service in H Company, 16th New Hampshire Volunteers of the Union Army. Dodge saw action at Port Hudson, LA and died of disease in New Orleans on June 16, 1863. Letters tell of his deployment and time in New York City while in transit south. Also contains instances of racist sentiment among a New England Union soldier.
