Description
The papers of John Read contain a log book from the Hull, England based whaler "Swan" which was skippered by Robert Dring. Entries from April 1836 to February 1837 detail their whaling expedition to Davis Straight and their difficulties overwintering in the pack ice. Includes two pencil sketches of the "Swan" as well as newspaper clippings related to the Hull whaling industry. Accompanying the log is Volume 47 of the "Nautical Magazine" containing a February 1878 story on the "Swan's" travails which drew upon Read's log.
