Description

The papers of David Shipler contain research materials, extensive handwritten notes, typescript drafts, and galley proofs of his books and articles. The papers also contain professional correspondence, photographs, audio recordings and a small selection of items related to his time as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College. The papers chronicle Shipler's career as a reporter for the New York Times and other news publications as well his work as an author of books. Extensive research and notes for the books "Arab and Jew: Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land," "The Working Poor: Invisible in America," "Russia: Broken Idols, Solemn Dreams" and "A Country of Strangers-Black and Whites in America" are found the papers. Typescript drafts for his book "The Rights of the People: How Our Search for Safety Invades Our Liberties," "Rights at Risk: The Limits of Liberty in Modern America," and "Freedom of Speech,"are also included.
