Description

The papers of Ernest Martin Hopkins contain professional correspondence, manuscripts, including the manuscript for his book “This Is Our Purpose”, articles, appointment books, journals, clippings, reports, financial documents, ephemera and scrapbook pages. The material documents his professional life before and after his tenure as president of Dartmouth College (1916-1945). Of note is correspondence related to his involvement with the War Department during World War I, the National Life Insurance Company, the Guam and American Samoa Committee, the National Economy League, and the Boston and Maine Railroad Company. Correspondents include John D. Rockefeller Jr., John D. Rockefeller III, Nelson Rockefeller, Deane C. Davis, Harvey P. Hood, William Jewett Tucker, Ernest Fox Nichols and John Sloan Dickey. Personal material including real estate and stock holdings, tax returns and some family correspondence can also be found in the collection.

Ernest Martin Hopkins (1877-1964), president of Dartmouth College (1916-1945) and graduate of the college with the Class of 1901. The collection contains professional and personal correspondence, manuscripts, articles, diaries, appointment books, clippings, reports, financial documents, ephemeral material and scrapbook pages. The papers chronicle Hopkins' professional life outside of Dartmouth.
